Bored of Education? Experience Real-Life Learning | Episode 228

Many people are bored of education. Thoughts of learning center around tests and memorization.

We must ask ourselves: is that what education is meant to be? Something worn out and stale?

Is education a thing to be endured rather than enjoyed?

Dr. Raymond Moore, one of the founders of the modern homeschool movement, taught that a well-rounded education consists of work, study, and service. The people who don’t enjoy education are resting on a stool with one foot.

In this episode, J. J. Seid, Carole Joy Seid, and Rachel Winchester talk about breaking the one-size-fits-all box of a boring education to fit the needs of each specific child.

Our hosts use a song by Christian hip-hop artist, Propaganda, to discuss the ways to trade a standardized education for real-life learning.

J. J., Carole, and Rachel explore the power of experiential learning, real-life experiences, and the joy of working alongside children.

As John Taylor Gatto said in his book, Dumbing Us Down, “It is time that we squarely face the fact that institutional schoolteaching is destructive to children. Nobody survives the seven-lesson curriculum completely unscathed, not even the instructors. The method is deeply and profoundly anti-educational. No tinkering will fix it” (pp. 17—18).

Both parents and children enjoy a balanced and well-rounded education of work, service, and study!
